Was the 1980s the Best Music Era ever?
With the launch of MTV in 1981 a dedicated music channel playing the latest music videos non stop. Music became widely available to everyone from rock to pop, funk and soul the 80s had it all.
So with that in mind we decided to compile a list of our “Top Music Icons” from the 80s.

Born August 16, 1958
Often referred to as the Queen of Pop! Madonnas Wikipedia page quotes her as being “one of the most successful performing artists in the world” having sold 300 millions records worldwide. Known not only for her singing voice, but also her acting career – winning a Golden Globe for her role in Evita!
June 7, 1958 – April 21, 2016
Born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota Prince went on to sell over 100 million records throughout his career, officially making him widely known as being one of the best selling artists of all time. The track Purple Rain coincided with his film debut and the album for it went on to spend an amazing 24 consecutive weeks at No.1 of the Billboards chart. Multi-talented and multi-instrumental Princes electric guitar performances are still among some of the finest ever performed to date.
August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009
Dubbed the King of Pop, and widely known as MJ – Michael Jackson is an iconic figure within Pop culture! Hits include Beat it, Billie Jean and Thriller (which is the best selling album of all time with 65 million sales). The videos that coincided with each of these songs were often co-directed mini movies themselves winning awards themselves, plus with the newly launched MTV as an outlet this helped to boost him around the world directly into the homes of the masses.
August 9, 1963 – February 11, 2012
According to The Guinness Book of World Records Whitney Houston was the “most awarded female act of all time” – 2009. Each of her 7 studio albums went on to generate great success generating between 170-200 million record sales Worldwide, she is also the “only artists to chart seven consecutive number ones on the Billboard 100.2
Her on screen debut was in the 1992 film The Bodyguard where she played the lead role, alongside Kevin Costner. With her soundtrack “I will always Love You” going on to win a Grammy Award for the Record of the Year and Album of the Year.
8 January 1947 – 10 January 2016
With estimated sales of 140 million albums Worldwide as mentioned on Wikipedia and gaining platinum, gold and silver certifications in both the UK and the US he was inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame in 1996. He not only had a love for music, but also acting – a man of many talents he was constantly innovating both on and off the screen.
The 1980s seems to have a cross over appeal for both young and old, appealing to people from various backgrounds. This could be the reason for its popularity amongst all age groups, as well people from all walks of life.
